ISLAMABAD — The president of All Pakistan Bar Association and eminent jurist Aitzaz Ahsan was rearrested and detained in his house after a brief brush with freedom.
The Punjab government had allowed the lawyer out of his house so that he could cast his vote in the Lahore High Court Bar Association’s elections yesterday.
He was given a rousing welcome at the court, but the authorities arrested him again after he had cast his vote and detained him in his Gulber Residence in Lahore.
Aitzaz called for a lawyers’ bus rally from Karachi to Islamabad to press for the reinstatement of deposed Chief Justice Ifthikar Chaudhry and other 67 judges who refused to take oath under the Provision Constitutional Order and also for the rehabilitation of the previous Supreme Court.
The government of Punjab has declared Aitzaz Ahsan’s house here a subjail and had sealed all roads leading to his house, banned visitors from meeting him and disconnected all telephone connections at his residence.
The Punjab government spokesman said that Aitzaz would not be allowed to meet any one.
