ABU DHABI, 26 February 2008 — Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) will build a new oil refinery to boost its output capacity by 417,000 barrels per day, Jassem Al-Sayegh, general manager of ADNOC’s refining arm Takreer, said yesterday at an oil conference here.

The new refinery will be built in Ruwais, where the existing largest refinery in the UAE currently produces 400,000 bpd.

The emirate’s refining capacity should increase to 885,000 bpd when the new plant enters service, Al-Sayegh said, pointing out that 85,000 bpd are currently produced by Um Al-Nar refinery.

Al-Sayegh did not disclose the cost of new refinery that will be located in Ruwais, some 240 kilometers from Abu Dhabi City. According to the state news agency WAM, the project is still in the planning phase and would be completed in 2013.

The engineering and design study for the plan is expected to be completed by the end of this year or the first quarter of next year, Al-Sayegh said.
