DHAKA, 28 March 2008 — Bangladesh will introduce mobile phones to the backwoods of southeastern Chittagong Hill Tracts, primarily in the three municipalities of Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban. The government decision, announced yesterday by Chief Advisor Fakhruddin Ahmed, met a long-time demand of the people of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, once at the center of a tribal insurgency. A Dec. 2, 1997 peace accord ended the revolt. The area was denied a mobile phone network in the past as the government feared cell phones will help the rebels.
