Routine Blood Donations Reveal 368 HIV Cases

RIYADH, 8 April 2008 — Hundreds of HIV cases were discovered in 2006 when thousands of people volunteered to donate blood across the Kingdom, Al-Eqtisadiah newspaper reported yesterday.

It said 368 HIV cases were discovered at 253 clinics across the Kingdom during the year. Further to this, 32,798 cases of hepatitis B, 2,862 cases of hepatitis C, 1,145 cases of syphilis, 13 cases of malaria and 777 cases of high blood pressure were discovered.

Ibrahim Al-Omar, an official with the Ministry of Health, said that 310,000 people were allowed to donate blood in 2006.

He also explained that blood is taken in proportion to a person’s body size and that the process takes less than a quarter of an hour.
