MUMBAI, 11 April 2008 — Akola district Superintendent of Police Deepak Pandey has been suspended pending investigation of charges he sexual harassed a young woman.
Pandey’s suspension was announced by Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil yesterday in the state assembly.
Pandey first landed into trouble when he humiliated a constable for booking him for a traffic offense when he was aide to a former state govenor. He again made headlines when his wife alleged harassment.
On Wednesday several legislators raised the issue of Pandey’s involvement in a case of sexual harassment. Pandey is facing an inquiry by the criminal investigation department into allegations he sexually harassed an 18-year old woman.
An interim report of the department said that witnesses may be afraid to come forward as long as Pandey remains in office.
