RIYADH, 4 May 2008 — The Bangladeshi government has appointed M. Fazlul Karim as its new ambassador to Saudi Arabia, the country’s mission announced here yesterday.

“The new ambassador, who will be coming to the Kingdom in July, is likely to take up current issues facing the Bangladeshi community here,” Wahidul Rahman, chargé d’affaires of the mission, told Arab News.

Karim, who is currently the Bangladeshi ambassador to Italy, will succeed Ambassador Iqramul Haque. Karim is a career diplomat who joined the Bangladesh Foreign Service in 1986. He has served as a diplomat in Washington, Islamabad and Hong Kong. He was previously director general in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ambassador Iqramul Haque, who is retiring in July, left the Kingdom yesterday on a month-long vacation. Haque completed his three-year term in February this year and was, subsequently, given an extension until July 26.

Wahidul Rahman, who is being transferred to the Philippines, will be in charge of the mission until Haque returns.
