Burney Elected to UNHRC Panel

KARACHI, 8 May 2008 — Prominent human rights activist and a former Pakistani federal minister, Ansar Burney, has been elected to the newly-established United Nations Human Rights Council Advisory Committee based in Geneva.

The first session of the UNHRC Advisory Committee will be held from Aug. 4-15.

In accordance with United Nations Human Rights Council Resolution 5/1 of June 18, 2007, the advisory committee elected 18 human rights activists from around the world through secret ballot. Burney has been elected unopposed for a three-year term as one of the members from Asia.

The geographic distribution of members are as follows: (a) five from Africa; (b) five from Asia; (c) two from Eastern Europe; (d) three from Latin America and the Caribbean; and (e) three from western Europe and other countries.
