JEDDAH, 8 May 2008 — The Saudi national karate team won the 4th Arab Police Karate Championship in Damascus, Syria. Thamer Al-Malki won the gold medal in the 55 kilograms weight category individual event after downing Egyptian Mohammed Othman in the final, while his brother Emad won the silver medal in the 60 kgs category after reaching the semifinal where the Syrian Ahmed Hassabullah defeated him, and the bronze went to Algerian Sadeeq Mohammed. In the 65 kgs category the bronze medal went to another Saudi, Ali Al-Kabi, who beat UAE’s Ali Al-Madfaa, while the gold went to Syrian Kareim Othman and the silver to Abdullah Al-Otaibi of UAE. In the second day of the competition, Malhous Al-Absi won the bronze medal in the 75 kgs category.
6th Asian Water Polo Championship
JEDDAH, 8 May 2008 — After taking a day off, the 6th Asian Water Polo Championship for Clubs in Kuwait resumes today with defending champions Al-Ittihad of Saudi Arabia facing Juan Donj of China, and Al-Ahli meeting Iran’s Abhar Azat in the quarterfinals. Ittihad failed to win their first match and lost 8 – 12 against Iranian Abhar Azat, Ahli lost as well 4-7 to Chinese club Juan Donj.
Ittihad crushed Al-Nidal team of Syria 22-4 only to get beaten again by Al-Kuwait of Kuwait 8-12. Al-Ahli won their second group match against Al-Qadisia of Kuwait 12-8, and drew their third against Tuseih Karatchi of Iran 9 –9.
Al-Nokhbah Athletics Championship
JEDDAH, 8 May 2008 — Al-Qatif hosts the Al-Nokhbah Athletics Championship for youth during the weekend with 150 athletes from different clubs in the Kingdom seeing action. Damk club has the most number of entries at 14. Rounding out the entries are: 13 Al-Khaleej, 11 Al-Ittihad, 10 Al-Tarf, 10 Al-Safa, 9 Al-Ahli, 8 Najran, 8 Al-Watani, 7 Al-Surah, 7 Al-Jubail, 5 Al-Adalah, 3 Alshula, 3 Mudar, 3 Al-Hilal, 3 Al-Nakheel, 3 Al-Rawdah, 2 Huttein, 2 Al-Eith and 1 Al-Rabea. The event is a qualifying tournament for the 11th GCC championship for youth to be held also in Qatif from May 13 to 15.
