JEDDAH, 12 May 2008 — The Haj Ministry announced yesterday that it would not issue any new licenses for three years to companies intending to serve domestic pilgrims.
“The main reason for taking this decision is the tremendous increase in the number of pilgrims coming from abroad, exceeding the capacity of existing facilities in the holy sites,” the ministry said.
So far the ministry has licensed 278 agencies that serve a total of 360,000 domestic pilgrims.
The ministry’s decision will not affect companies that have already given licenses, the ministry said, adding that there was no bar on renewing expired licenses.
