Equestrian Championship Starts in Riyadh Tomorrow

RIYADH, 16 May 2008 — An equestrian championship is to be held at the Horse Riding Club of King Abdul Aziz Military Academy here tomorrow.

Prince Nawaf ibn Faisal, vice president of the General Presidency of Youth Welfare and the president of the Saudi Equestrian Federation, and Prince Abdullah ibn Fahd ibn Abdullah, vice president of the SEF, and a number of princes and equestrian lovers are supporting the championship, which will have individual and team show jumping events.

Competition level will be ‘A’ with the height of obstacles 130 to 140 cm. The winner will be awarded King Abdul Aziz Cup and Bayet Al-Riyadh Cup, the sponsor of this championship. ALJ will participate in this event by giving Toyota Aurion car for the winner of the competition.

The SEF has announced completion of all preparations for the championship, which is composed of 13 stages. There will be a group of Saudi elite riders who have represented the Kingdom in various international events. One of them is the Olympic rider Khalid Al-Eid the holder of last year’s championship.

Others are Abdullah Al Sharbatly, the strongest competitor, Ramzi Al-Duhami, Faris Fahd Al-Eid and Fahd Al-Gead. Prince Abdullah ibn Miteb will not be taking part, as he is participating in a training camp for the forthcoming Beijing Olympics.

Equestrian ranks among the popular sports in Saudi Arabia with a rich history that dates back to the ancient era of the region.

Established in 1989, the SEF is one of the most active national federations. It joined the Asian and the international equestrian federations in 1990.
