JEDDAH, 27 May 2008 — Al-Wehda emerged champions in the Prince Sultan ibn Fahd Cup judo tournament, clinching five gold medals and one bronze in the competition that attracted 10 teams. Second place went to Al-Taie with one gold and two bronzes, and tied third were Heraa and Sadous, who each won one gold medal.
The 11th Pan Arab Games champion in the -60 kilograms weight category, Eissa Majrashi gave Heraa their lone victory as he reasserted his supremacy in the class. Ali Al-Minyawi of Ittihad came second, and Faisal Al-Sahoub of Al-Taie and Nadir Hazzazi of Al-Qadisia shared third place.
In the -66 kgs. category, Abdulrahman Al-Hazmi of Al-Wehda claimed the gold after a grueling battle that lasted 20 minutes against Ittihad’s Mohammed Fairag who placed second. Al-Ansar club’s Ashraf Abdulbasit and Hussam Ali of Air Force team shared third place.
Yasir Ayyad of Wehda clinched the gold in the -72 kgs. category followed by Abdulrahamn Al-Minyawi of Ittihad in second place. Mahir Fallatah of Al-Wehda and Nadir Al-Harbi of Al-Qaseem Emergency were joint third.
In the -81 kgs. category Wehda’s Naif Mezu won the gold after beating Hassan Sorour of Ittihad who came second. Mansour Al-Ghaib of Al-Qaseem Emergency came third in a tie with Al-Qadisia’s Feras Al-Shangiti. Mezu went on to win his second gold of the tournament when he won the open weight category against Ittihad’s Abdulrahman Al-Minyawi. Fahad Al-Debekas of Air Force Turki Munir of Al-Taie were tied for third place. Munir, however, took the gold in the -90 kgs. category from Muhanad Al-Ateeg of Air Force team. The third placers were Essam Al-Shihri of Air Force, and Mohammed Fagash of Qadisia.
Winning the -100kgs. class was Emad Al-Doussari of Sadous who beat Qadisia’s Sulh Al-Khaibary into second place. Ibrahim Al-Faraidi of Shabab and Mahdi Ayyash of Ittihad were the joint third placers.
Mohammed Al-Qurashi extended Wehda’s gold medal-winning run in the +100 kgs. when he beat Salim Al-Salim of Shabab. Third place went to Qadisia’s Omar Al-Maghrabi and Raid Abu Sham of Ittihad.
