DAMAM, 28 May 2008 — A Saudi man divorced his wife because she refused to wear a seatbelt, the Al-Eqtisadiah daily reported yesterday. After a heated argument, the wife asked her husband to take her to her parents’ house. When they got into the car, the husband told her to put on her seatbelt. She refused and said that she hoped he would get pulled over by a police officer and ticketed. The man became further enraged and threatened to divorce her if she didn’t fasten her seatbelt. The couple exchanged more verbal blows and their argument reached a climax when the man uttered the magic word: Divorce! The couple immediately realized what had just happened and regretted that it had gone so far. The husband is currently consulting Shariah law experts on whether his proclamation of divorce is valid or not. The report did not say what the fate of the marriage is.
