JEDDAH, 14 June 2008 — A unique exhibition of egg art by Farha Sayeed, wife of Indian Consul General Ausaf Sayeed, is set to open at Jeddah’s Reda Art Gallery today.

The first of its kind exhibition features carved and decorated ostrich, emu, rhea, goose and chicken eggs. According to exhibition organizers, tomorrow has been exclusively reserved for women. Located on Palestine Street near Hamra Sofitel Hotel, the gallery is expected to draw a large number of Saudis and expatriates for the exhibition which is set for opening at 7:30 p.m.

According to Farha, the art of egg decoration goes back to early civilizations, when eggs were colored and used as gifts to celebrate many events. “The high point of all time was reached in the fabulous egg-shaped treasures created by the imaginative goldsmith of Russia, Peter Carl Faberge, and his meticulous artists and craftsmen. Their creations have provided inspiration to many real eggshell decorators all over the world,” she said.

She said the decorated eggs featured in the current exhibition are individually handcrafted making each piece a masterpiece of its own kind.

“Each egg has been created with great precision and ingenuity and involved several hours of intricate work,” she said.

A part of Farha’s collection of decorated eggs was displayed in the International Ramadan Exhibition titled “Ramadan around the World” held at Jeddah Intercontinental in October 2005, which featured cultural exhibits of arts and crafts from various countries.

Her work of art has been widely acclaimed by people from all walks of life. The exhibition is open to all. For details, please call: 6675700 or send e-mail to [email protected].
