RIYADH: A rich businessman arranged for his son to drive to his wedding in a 2005 Datsun van to teach him a lesson in modesty, Al-Eqtisadiah newspaper reported. The man said that his son had become arrogant and he wanted to teach him a lesson he would never forget. In order to coerce his son to ride in the vehicle, which belonged to the family driver, the father told him he would renounce him if he failed to obey. The son accepted on condition he would be allowed to leave the wedding in his own car.
Driving them nuts
RIYADH: Police have detained a woman for violating rules banning women from driving, a newspaper said yesterday. The woman from Buraidah was stopped by a police patrol after driving 10 km to collect her husband, Al-Hayat newspaper said. The woman’s “legal guardian” — her husband — was required to sign a declaration that he would not allow her to drive again, it said. It was not immediately clear if she was released or would face legal action.
Too hot to handle
JEDDAH: Police arrested a 20-year-old woman after the car she was driving in was involved in several accidents. The car belonged to the woman’s male friend, who had asked her to wait in the car while he sat an exam. The youth had left the keys in to keep the air-conditioning on. Due to her inability to operate the vehicle properly, the young woman crashed the car several times. A member of the public informed the police. She was arrested. Her male friend was also held for being in “khulwa” (a state of seclusion) with the woman. Police were, however, kind enough to allow youngster to sit his exams.
