MAKKAH: Civil Defense firefighters evacuated 1,200 pilgrims from one of Makkah’s largest hotels after a fire broke out on the property’s fifth floor.
Maj. Ali Al-Muntashri, spokesman for the Civil Defense, said the fire was caused by an electric short circuit. He added that three pilgrims were treated for smoke inhalation.
The entire 17-floor building was evacuated within 20 minutes, he added. Four firefighting units and five rescue teams took part in the operation.
Murder at work site
A Pakistani worker at a construction site on the Um Al-Qura University hospital stabbed to death a fellow Pakistani worker recently.
Abdul Muhsen Al-Maiman, spokesman for Makkah police, said the man’s body was taken to King Faisal Hospital in Shisha. He added that the murderer has admitted to his crime and is in police custody.
