JEDDAH: The 1st of three rounds of Chevrolet Speed Star Championship is being held at Durat Al Arous here for two days from Wednesday. Its two other rounds will be in Alkhobar and Riyadh.

In each round, participants will display their drifting-style technique in a twisting track of 1.50 km specifically designed for the championship. The races will be judged on time, and drivers will accumulate points from each round with the title awarded to the driver with the most points. The official car will be Lumina SS for its great power and high flexibility on the track.

As with other Chevrolet motorsport events in the region, accessibility to the competition is a major focus. A rear wheel or all wheel drive car and the desire to compete are the only requirements to enter the championship. The results will be based on the points collected— 20 points for 1st position, 15 for the 2nd, 12 for the 3rd, 10 for the 4th, 8 for the 5th, 6 for the 6th , 4 for the 7th and 2 for the 8th .

The organizing committee formed with the support of Abdullah Bakhashab Establishment for motorsport development, which has a track record of organizing and developing motorsport across Saudi Arabia, said it had completed the preparations for the competition.

After the great success of the last championship 2007, Chevrolet goes ahead with its plans to continue supporting motorsport events in the Kingdom.

Last year’s competition was successful and useful for young people who participated in this event and even for media representatives who were treated to an exciting preview of drifting techniques, and were able to experience it themselves by riding along with a professional driver.

There will cash awards for the winners SR10,000 for the 1st, SR6,000 for the 2nd and SR3,000 for the 3rd.
