JEDDAH: Ahmad Al-Esa won the 1st round of Chevrolet Speed Star competition held at Durat Al-Arous in north Jeddah over the weekend.
Al-Esa in his Chevrolet Lumina SS car led the podium winners clocking the best time of 01:46:929 on the second day.
The event organized by Abdullah Bakhashab Est. for motor sport development drew a large number of car racing enthusiasts kingdomwide who pitted skills in a nonstop endurance battle as each tired to score the maximum under the new system of awarding system.
A large number of race enthusiasts turned up at the venue that was interesting from the start, especially for those who used their modified cars.
The race began after grouping the participants according to their vehicles into four classes based on the capacity of the engine, its power and its production year.
They were standard six cylinders, modified six cylinders, modified eight cylinders and standard eight cylinders. After the technical test on the first day every participant had to make a free tour through the track. Then the drivers had two trials to collect the best time.
Al-Moori, a phenomenon in the exciting motorsport and the winner of Chevrolet Speed Star 2007 Championship, charged through the grueling qualification process and winning the tandem battle of the first day. In the 2nd day Al-Esa managed to defeat Al-Moori and finalize the round staying on the top.
Eyad Al-Najar the 2nd winner of the 1st day managed to stay in his place 2nd on the podium clocking 01:47:181 driving his red standard 8 cylinders Lumina SS.
Al-Moori failed to stay in the 1st position leaving its place for Ahmad Al-Esa and managed to stand on the podium 3rd clocking01:48:403.
2007 was the first year of the Chevrolet Speed Star series- the first national championship series in the Kingdom.
The second round will be in Alkhobar and the third in Hail. In each round, participants will display their drifting-style technique in a twisting track of 1.50 km specifically designed for the championship.
The races will be judged on time, and drivers will accumulate points from each round with the title awarded to the driver with the most points.
The official car will be Lumina SS for its great power and high flexibility on the track.
As with other Chevrolet Motorsport events in the region, accessibility to the competition is a major focus; to enter the Speed Star Championship a rear wheel or all wheel drive car and the desire to compete are the only requirements.
