DUBAI: Five people were killed and four others seriously injured when a minibus crashed into a road barrier and then landed on top of another car on the opposite side of the road in Dubai early yesterday morning.
Three Filipino women, the bus driver and an Indian national were among the dead. According to police, the Egyptian driver was speeding and lost control.
The bus, which was coming down Sheikh Rashid Road from Al-Garhoud Bridge heading for Bur Dubai, swerved toward the left lane and hit a road barrier and a lamppost. The impact caused the bus to fly on to the opposite side of the road and land on top of a saloon.
The accident disrupted traffic and motorists were stuck for hours. Maj. Gen Khamis Mattar Al-Mazeina, acting chief of Dubai police, and other senior police officers were at the scene supervising rescue work.
Speaking to the press, Al-Mazeina described the loss of life on Dubai’s roads as “senseless,” pointing out that in the past two days nine people were killed in road accidents.
Four people were killed in Dubai on Friday in different accidents that occurred within a span of seven hours.
