Ahli thru to semifinal

JEDDAH: Jeddah-based Al-Ahli club finished first in Group B to make the semifinal after an impressive 4-1 victory over Dhofar of Oman last night in the Gulf Clubs Chamionship at the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium here.

Al-Salmiyah qualified second in the group with six points after winning against Al-Najma of Bahrain 3-2 earlier in the day.

Ahli only needed a simple draw to advance but ended up taking the full three points to finish the group stage of the competition on seven points from two wins and one draw.

Ahli canceled out an early Omani goal courtesy of Al-Hussain Khodari in the 18th minute and rattled in four unanswered goals to win the match with a flourish.

Ahli equalized in the 41st minute through Alaa Al-Reshani. Further Ahli goals came from Abdul Raheem Jizawi in the 64th minute, team captain Saheeb Al-Abdullah on a penalty kick and Muhammad Massad via an injury time strike.

Today, Al-Nasr, the other Saudi team in the fold, face Al-Nahda of Oman in a Group A match in Doha. Nasr is in danger of elimination with only one point from one draw and one defeat.
