Austrian Hannes Arch wins Red Bull Air Race

BUDAPEST, Hungary: Austrian ace Hannes Arch won the Red Bull Air Race in Budapest on Wednesday, claiming his first-ever victory in the competition in only his second season.

Brit Steve Jones was second while Paul Bonhomme, the current Championship leader, was third.

The result means Arch is now in second place in the Red Bull Air Race Championship with three more races to go.

American defending champion Mike Mangold was fourth in Budapest while local pilot Peter Besenyei finished fifth.

Some 600,000 spectators lined the banks of the River Danube on Wednesday, a Hungarian national holiday, to watch the 12 Red Bull Air Race pilots compete for points and try to avoid penalties.

The pilots fly just meters above the water on a track marked by inflatable pylons known as Air Gates, reaching speeds of up to 370 kph and experiencing forces of up to 12g.

Results of the Red Bull Air Race in Budapest: Hannes Arch (AUT), 9 points, Steve Jones (GBR) 9 points, Paul Bonhomme (GBR), 7 points, Mike Mangold (USA) 6 points and Peter Besenyei (HUN), 5 points.
