JEDDAH: The Congress party will improve its performance in the politically crucial states of Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh in the coming national elections, said two senior Congress leaders.

“Under the dynamic and inspiring leadership of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi the party is sure to improve its tally in Bihar and Jharkhand,” said Sarfaraz Ahmad, who was twice president of Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee (BPCC), in undivided Bihar.

Sarfaraz said that there is a realization on the part of the voters that only Congress can provide a stable government at the center, and we are planning to catch on this sentiment to improve the performance of our members of Parliament from Bihar and Jharkhand.

“Generally, people are disillusioned with the mere rhetoric of good governance from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in Bihar and with the poor show of the government in Jharkhand. Moreover, we will have a bigger alliance in Bihar and Jharkhand which will certainly ensure a better result in the next elections,” Sarfaraz, a former member of Parliament from Giridih in Jharkhand and once a close confidante of late Rajiv Gandhi, said. Another Congress leader and general secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee, S.M. Sultan, who is accompanying Sarfaraz, expressed similar views.

“The party rank and file is in high spirit in UP due to the people-to-people contact of Rahul Gandhi, which has brought them closer to the party. And after Mulayam Singh Yadav’s joining hands with Congress, things have dramatically turned in our favor and we are expecting a better result in next elections,” Sultan said.

Sultan, who is also vice chairman of National Handloom Board, said the Congress-led government in the center has done fairly well and people will certainly reward it with their votes in the elections.

Speaking about the recent terror attack, Sarfaraz said, “the blame-game must stop and all political parties should join hands to defeat the menace of terrorism.”

“Leaders of all parties must realize that the country is facing a grave threat from terrorists who are striking at their will in one city after another. This is a crisis situation and calls for a greater wisdom and far-sightedness on their part to come up with a single voice to defeat terror,” he said.
