RIYADH: Dirab Golf Club joins the country’s National Day celebrations when it hosts the annual Saudi National Day Golf Tournament this Friday.
Members of the Saudi national team led by captain Ali Balhareth and players from various golfing communities are expected to tee it up for the tournament.
Set to tee off at 7 a.m. the event will have the two-ball better ball format with the top five two-man teams at the end of the 18-hole competition to be awarded prizes.
The top prize is a 21-inch LCD television set.
Also, lots of giveaways including gold-plated repair tool with ball marker await the participants, according to Dirab Golf Club Manager Bouchaib El Jadiani.
El Jadiani said he is not ruling out players from outside Riyadh signing up since the tournament will be held in time for the Ramadan Eid holidays.
This will be the third straight year Dirab is mounting this tournament. The Saudi National Day Tournament, sponsored by Zahid Tractor, kicks off a busy autumn season at DGC with tournaments sponsored by SABB on Oct. 31, Zahid Tractor on Nov. 21 and Riyadh Cement Company on Dec. 5, according to Andrea Corbett, the club’s marketing and public relations and sponsorship coordinator.
Dirab will also host the Ryder Cup-style matches with Rolling Hills Golf Club of Aramco on Nov. 15 to 17, in which the Riyadh team hopes to regain pride and win the cup back from the champion Rolling Hills team.
El Jadiani said the exchange program has grown over the years that there will now be 40 players on each side. Rolling Hills is conducting qualifying tournament for players seeking places on the Riyadh-bound team.
