BURAIDAH: Ten people were killed and five others injured in a traffic accident on Tuesday night in Asyah, some 60 kilometers east of Buraidah.

A source from the Asyah Traffic Department told Arab News that the accident took place when two speeding cars collided head-on, killing all the passengers, including women and children. “All seven people in the two cars, members of two families, died,” he said.

A GMC van carrying a family of five ran into the wreckage that way lying in the middle of the road, the source said, adding that one man and one woman from the GMC were killed. Three other passengers, including two children, were seriously injured.

Ali Falah Al-Harby, a traffic policeman, said seven people died on the spot and the other three died in hospital.

A two-lane road connecting Asyah to Buraidah is under construction. The old single-lane road does not meet acceptable safety standards, one person who witnessed the accident said.
