JEDDAH: A group of children from Saudi Arabia, who traveled to Malaysia to compete in the 15th Annual UCMAS Abacus and Mental Arithmetic International Competition on Nov. 23, has won three awards.
“We are very pleased that our Saudi team has won three awards at the UCMAS mental arithmetic world championship competition. We also won a championship trophy for the mid-level,” said Mohamed Rafi, the chief moderator for UCMAS in Saudi Arabia.
Kareem Attasi of Jeddah won fourth place at the basic level. Karthiga Mohan from Riyadh team won the first place, beating 600 children in the intermediate category. Sandeep from Jubail came third in the same competition. All participants of UCMAS Saudi Arabia were awarded the merit cup for their outstanding performance.
There are 600 students in each category competing from all over the world.
Attasi had to answer 150 questions in eight minutes, but got a few of them wrong which cost him a higher ranking.
Mohan solved 200 sums in eight minutes with 100 percent correct answers. Sandeep participated in the same category as Mohan. According to Rafi, the children felt proud to carry the Saudi flag and win an award on an international level at this young age.
