GAZA CITY: A Palestinian fighter was killed and four other people were seriously wounded yesterday when Israeli tanks fired several shells east of Khan Younis city in southern Gaza Strip, witnesses and medical sources said.
The sources said an Israeli undercover unit entered Al-Farheen village east of Khan Younis in the afternoon. Palestinian fighters opened fire at them when their cover was blown. Israeli tanks, which were in the area to protect the undercover unit, then fired four shells at a group of fighters.
The Israeli Army gave a slightly different version of the events. It said Israeli paratroopers had identified a group of Palestinians laying an explosive device near Gaza’s border with Israel. The men opened fire as the soldiers approached them and were shot at. The army said at least one Palestinian was killed. None of the Israeli soldiers was injured.
