RIYADH: A group of Indian expatriates is seeking the help of the Indian Embassy for the repatriation of an expatriate worker who has been lying unconscious for more than four months at a hospital in Al-Kharj following a road accident.

Local police brought the worker, who was injured in the accident, to King Khaled Hospital in Al-Kharj. The worker, Mohammad Yousuf, 35, was hit by a speeding car while walking on the side of a road at Dhilam, 150 km from Riyadh.

Yousuf, who is from Karimganj district in Assam, had been working as a mason in Dhilam for the past 14 years.

According to sources, Yousuf is a runaway worker who deserted his employer due to nonpayment of salaries and had to pay SR200 to his current sponsor, who gave him shelter and employment. Sources said the police have identified the driver who knocked Yousuf. However, no action has been taken against him so far.

The Federation of Kerala Associations in Saudi Arabia (FOKASA) has requested the Indian Embassy to send a representative to King Khaled Hospital in Al-Kharj to file a case on behalf of the victim.

The embassy, the grouping said, should try to obtain compensation for the victim and arrange his repatriation to India at the earliest.
