ETAWAH, India: In a bid to distance himself from the Congress Party, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said here yesterday that his party has always been an opponent of the party heading the central government. "We saved the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government over nuclear issue in the national interest. We found the nuclear 123 agreement with the US beneficial to the country," he said.

Speaking at a function, Yadav said that the UPA government should not take SP's support for granted.

He also attacked the Uttar Pradesh chief minster and Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati stating that her government was adopting confrontational attitude and treating the SP as it's enemy. "All the good work being undertaken by the SP comes to a grinding halt as the Mayawati government creates several hurdles in the projects that are taken up for the benefits of the people of the state by my party," Yadav alleged.

SP General Secretary Amar Singh, in his speech, blasted parties in the UPA alliance. Blaming them for the defeat of the Congress in Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, Singh said that the alliance parties should abandon the divide and rule policy and exhibit unity to win the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
