DUBAI: A 27-year-old infertile woman who falsified the birth certificate of a baby claiming it was her own has been handed a 12-month jail sentence by the Dubai Court of First Instance.

Saeed Salem bin Sarm, the presiding judge, sentenced the child’s 30-year-old biological mother, SM, and the infertile woman’s mother each to three years in jail for abetting the crime. The prosecution charged SM with falsifying information on the birth certificate of her baby and misleading the health authorities by claiming the infertile woman, AS, was the mother. All three defendants are Emirati citizens.

SM, a housewife, had decided to give away her baby after she was separated from her husband. The prosecution charged the infertile woman and her mother of aiding SM to falsify the birth registration.

“SM was pregnant and penniless when she came to our house three years ago. She claimed that she had quarreled with her husband and needed a shelter,” AS said in her testimony to the court. “When she said she had no way of supporting her baby, I gave her a copy of my passport so that she would register the boy in my name.”
