DUBAI: A 12-year-old boy who committed suicide last week was trying to copy a scene from a popular Turkish soap opera, according to the boy's aunt.

The boy was a fan of the Turkish drama "Dumu'u Al-Ward" (Tears of the Rose). "In the series one of the stars commits suicide in prison by hanging himself," said the boy's aunt.

The boy, Eisa, lived at his grandfather's home in Ras Al-Khaimah as his parents are divorced. His mother said that Eisa was having problems at school and went to live at his grandfather's house so that his aunt could supervise his education.

The aunt, who was the last person to see the boy alive, said she had helped him with his homework and that he had gone to bed at around 10 p.m. The maid discovered him dead when she tried to open his bedroom door and found it locked. She went outside and looked in from the window and found Eisa hanging from the curtain rails. The 12-year-old hanged himself with a nylon belt used by school children to carry their books.

The aunt said that Eisa probably did not realize that he was going to die. "I think he thought it was a game and nothing would happen to him," she said.

Meanwhile, Eisa's parents have been trading accusations about who is responsible for his death. His father blamed the boy's mother saying she neglected him and that is why he committed suicide. The father also claimed that he became suspicious because his former wife's family insisted on burying him without informing him.

The father also accused the mother of turning his child against him and denying him access to visit him.

On the other hand the boy's mother accused the father of trying to get blood money from her. "He is the one who neglected the boy since his birth. My son was born with visual problems and I paid for his treatment. The father rarely paid for upkeep and never bothered to see him," she said.

The police have ruled out foul play and said the coroner examined the boy's body and found no signs of abuse.
