JEDDAH: The Prince Sultan College for Tourism and Business in the city’s first Annual Basketball Tournament has been a slam-dunk of an event at Roshan Mall.
The college dean, Professor Yassin Al-Jefry, and Student Affairs Supervisor Thamer Abu-Ghalib brought in Jeddah United’s Obaid Madani and coach Umar to organize the event promoting higher education in the Kingdom.
The National Commercial Bank is the major sponsor of the tournament offering SR15,000 for the winner and SR7,000 for the runner-up.
Roshan Mall, Gatorade, Hattrick, Fainak, and MTV Arabia are the other sponsors.
Sixteen teams are taking part in this tournament. The 9-day event with four groups started last Wednesday.
Each team played three games with the top two in each group advancing to the final 8 knockout round. Jeddah Raceway’s Gladiators, and Fasial Park 1 and 2 lost in the first round.
In Tuesday’s final 8, Zenith beat the Jaguars and Parker edged out the Giants.
The Tigers slipped by captain Asard’s Gold’s Gym team and The Egyptians beat Shamps. The winner of Wednesday night’s Zenith against the Tigers and The Egyptians against Parker set final showdown that will be held today at 7:30 p.m.
Roshan Mall is providing refreshments and there is family seating to view the event. The Prince Sultan College is giving away 10 free scholarships to the training courses they offer in the three-point shooting contest, and there are cash prizes for the half-court shot contest. It has been a fun and exciting week with participation and attendance from Saudi and expatriate communities. Gold’s Gym’s captain Asard and the biggest winners, Mohannad Al-Jeddawi, will be announcing the games, and Mahmood Protchio and his team of scorekeepers and referees officiating the game.
