NEW DELHI: Differences within the three-member Election Commission have once again hit headlines, with Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami recommending the removal of Election Commissioner Navin Chawla.
The government is seized of CEC’s recommendation to remove Chawla, the Congress party said yesterday, as the reported move ahead of the Lok Sabha elections divided legal experts.
But Chawla yesterday said he had no intention of resigning following Gopalaswami’s move to remove him. “Why should I resign?” Chawla told reporters. “We have to conduct the (coming) general elections unitedly and with dignity.”
“I have no idea about the letter. I am not aware about this (letter),” he added. “The Election Commission has delivered flawless elections to the country for the last several years. We will continue to do so,” Chawla said.
