JUBAIL: KIMS Medical Center in Jubail will hold a five-day cancer detection camp on the hospital premises. The camp begins today and will provide free consultation to the public and educate them about early signs of cancer.
Dr. Nazeer Ahmed, a physician, along with his colleagues Dr. Jayaraj and Dr. Preeta Rabindranath will manage the camp. After undergoing thorough check-ups, patients will be advised to avail themselves of the best tertiary care available at KIMS in Trivandrum.
The camp, which coincides with World Cancer Day, is significant as cancer is the leading cause of death around the globe, constituting 13 percent of the cause of deaths worldwide. About 7.9 million people reportedly lost their lives as a result of cancer in 2007.
Cancer is increasing in Saudi Arabia with 8,000 new cases being reported each year, according to Dr. Qasim Al-Qasabi, the CEO of King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh. The World Health Organization estimates that 84 million people will die of cancer between 2005 and 2015 without intervention.
