Thai film reflects on post-tsunami life

JEDDAH: Thailand’s international award-winning film “Wonderful Town” screened at the 2nd Asian film festival here on Sunday night is the story of a stranger coming to Takua Pa, a town in southern Thailand. The town was badly hit and damaged by tsunami 2004 and within minutes it became hopeless for the inhabitants. Since the tsunami, people have been rendered jobless and there is nothing to do for anyone. The story begins in 2007 when Ton, an architect, arrives in the town on an assignment. He rents a room in a small hotel owned by Na, the town daughter. Both Ton and Na begin to have a secret love affair, but soon people come to know and whisper about it. Ton is looked upon as an enemy. The town tries to destroy the beauty that it cannot have for itself. The film has a tragic end after a 92-minute run. Ton is killed by the town’s youths. The film directed by Aditya Assarat was released in 2007. The film was preceded by a documentary on Thailand’s world-class destinations including Phuket and Pattaya aside from Bangkok for vacationers and shoppers, and for spa, diving and golf enthusiasts. Last night, China screened its documentary “China in Harmony” followed by feature film “The Road Home.” Tomorrow, Japan will screen its documentary “Japan — Land of Vitality” and feature film “Always Sanchome no Yuhi.”
