JEDDAH: The Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry has launched a SR50 million fund to support needy people in the governorate.
The JCCI announced the establishment of the fund on Monday following a meeting which was attended by JCCI Chairman Muhammad Al-Fadl, Secretary-General of the Islamic Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture Saleh Kamel and the head of the Jeddah Council for Social Responsibility, Ulfat Qabbani.
The fund will begin operating this year, said Qabbani.
She added that private companies, establishments and banks would be contacted in the next few days to contribute to the fund and present proposals for its modus operandi.
“The fund will enable companies, establishments and banks to carry out a social role in supporting the poor and the needy,” Qabbani said. She added that help would not be limited to the residents of Jeddah but to people who live in the entire governorate.
She said the fund would be of special significance to youths looking for work in small projects.
Qabbani said Saleh Kamel would be the chairman of the fund and that he would select its members that would include companies, establishments, banks, charitable organizations and people keen to help the poor.
“The fund will further boost the government’s strenuous efforts to promote public welfare,” she said.
Qabbani underscored the great role that the JCCI has been playing, saying the chamber has already established a fund to support extremely poor families and a Takaful (social solidarity) fund to provide finance to small- and medium-scale enterprises.
