AL-JOUF: Custom officials at the Al-Haditha entry point on the Saudi-Jordanian border foiled 68 attempts to smuggle drugs into the Kingdom last year. Zayed Al-Zayed, general manager of the Al-Haditha Customs Department, said customs officials also seized over 13 million pills and more than 5,000 counterfeit goods, and foiled 20 attempts to smuggle fake currency into the Kingdom and four attempts to leave the Kingdom with large amounts of undeclared cash.

The entry point also saw a significant increase in the number of passengers traveling through it in 2008. The total number increased by 9.5 percent since 2007, reaching more than 3.7 million passengers compared to 1.2 million passengers the year before.

“The entry point is working continuously to improve services and train employees to improve performance. The Customs Department is now using the latest technology to search vehicles and containers, and to discover hiding places in cars and trucks without disassembling them,” he added.
