YANBU: A Saudi student was hailed a hero by police for saving two young schoolgirls who were being abducted by an expatriate worker on a deserted Yanbu street yesterday.

Raid Al-Qamisi, a student at Yanbu Boy’s High School, was driving along the street when he saw the expatriate forcing the two young girls, who were returning from school, into a building under construction.

Al-Qamisi heard the girls’ cry for help and stopped his car. The man then released the girls who then told Al-Qamisi that they were being abducted. The youth telephoned the police and physically struggled with the man to prevent him from fleeing while police came.

Brig. Jameel Al-Ruhaily, director of police in Yanbu, said Al-Qamisi’s timely intervention saved the girls.

Al-Ruhaily said he has written to the principal of Al-Qamisi’s school, asking him to award him a prize to serve as an example for other students.

Beggars arrested

Two expatriate men, one dressed in an abaya, were arrested by Yanbu police for begging. The two men were arrested after a member of the public informed police that they were behaving in a suspicious manner. On arrest, the men, who were accompanied by a child, told police that they had come from Madinah.

Police are investigating whether they have been involved in other crimes and will then hand them over to the Passport Department for deportation, a police source said.
