DUBAI: A main suspect in the investigation into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates, Al Arabiya television said yesterday.

The UAE-based channel said Mohammed Zuhair Al-Siddiq, a former Syrian intelligence officer, was arrested in the emirate of Sharjah and was being held by UAE security authorities.

An international court convened in The Hague in March to try suspects in the murder, four years after the politician’s death.

Initially Siddiq was a witness who gave evidence to UN investigators. His information, however, was later discredited, and at the UN commission’s recommendation, he was arrested in France in October 2005 as a suspect in the murder.

He disappeared from house arrest in France in March 2008.
