AL-JOUF: A Syrian expatriate miraculously escaped death in a six-car pileup on the Qurayat-Essaweya highway on Friday.

The Syrian crashed into the rear of a gasoline tanker setting off a chain reaction with five other vehicles ramming in the rear.

The Syrian escaped as he stepped out of his car to inspect the damage. No sooner had he got out than a speeding truck driver, who failed to see the stationary vehicles, crashed into his car, which was then totaled. Four others failed to control their cars in time and became part of the pileup.

Police said four of the drivers sustained minor injuries.

Burglars arrested

Police in Al-Jouf arrested three Saudi burglars who broke into a house and stole more than SR50,000 worth of goods. Col. Daman bin Wanis Al-Daran, spokesman for Al-Jouf police, said all three men have criminal record and were traced after evidence was found linking them to the robbery.

In another news, a Saudi in his 30s attempted to commit suicide after taking 16 pills late Friday.

The man is said to be suffering from undisclosed mental problems. His family brought him to hospital where doctors used the suction pump to empty his stomach. The Saudi is reportedly out of danger.
