AL-JOUF: Police here have denied reports published in an online newspaper that four Saudis — two men and two women — were arrested for flouting rules regarding khulwa (illegal seclusion of unrelated men and women).

Col. Daman Al-Daran, spokesman for Al-Jouf police, said the report was false and unreal, adding that the online newspaper should have confirmed its information by contacting official police spokesmen before publishing it.

“There are official spokesmen who are assigned to speak about such things and reporters should get their information from these officials,” he added.

The report claimed that Al-Jouf police arrested the four and that one of the women was pregnant. She had allegedly been living with one of the two men for six months.

The report also claimed that the other Saudi woman had been forced into prostitution and had run away from her pimp. It said that the woman was forced to offer sex to farmers in the area.

“All reporters and newspapers should be careful and not rush to publish news like this without verifying the validity of such claims with official spokesmen. Such news might be just rumors. They serve to create a negative image of the Al-Jouf area and people who live here,” said Al-Daran.

He added that such reports are red herrings and waste police time.
