JEDDAH: Coffee is no longer associated with health risks and it is recommended you drink 2-5 cups of coffee said nutritionist Mona Shantouf recently at the Hilton. In her presentation “Demystifying Coffee”, she shared important facts and recent research findings on the second most consumed beverage worldwide after water.
“Recent studies proved that moderate coffee consumption is actually good for the health,” said Shantouf. “Adults need 400 mg per day of caffeine which defies the most common myth about the dangers of caffeine to one’s health.”
According to Shantouf, coffee contains a rich amount of polyphones, which acts like an antioxidant inside the human body.
“A cup of coffee could contain anywhere between 150-550 mg of antioxidants depending on the type and blend of the coffee beans,” said Shantouf. “Coffee antioxidants account for 60 percent of the total antioxidant intake for moderate coffee drinkers.”
When the person follows a balanced diet and does not suffer from any health problems such as diabetes, blood pressure or cholesterol, then a daily cup of coffee is beneficial to the health.
“Excessive consumption of any food or beverage would break the recommended balance of nutrients required to maintain health and wellbeing,” said Shantouf.
Nestle sponsored the presentation as part of an awareness campaign targeting Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Lebanon and United Arab Emirates.
