ISLAMABAD: Abdul Qadir blamed meddling by Pakistan cricket officials for his sudden resignation as chief selector earlier this week.
“I was promised a free hand as chief selector, but I was not allowed to work,” said Qadir, who resigned Monday after serving as chief selector for just six months.
“I quit because I was not willing to accept interference in selection matters.” He said the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) took arbitrary decisions and the national squad’s coach, Intikhab Alam had more powers in selecting the squad than the selectors.
“There was no use of having a selection committee, so I thought it best to resign,” said Qadir, whose selection was immediately accepted by the PCB.
Qadir said the PCB ignored his suggestion of appointing separate captains for tests and limited-overs internationals.
He said he wanted to appoint Younis Khan as captain for the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup in England.
Qadir said he would have also axed former skipper Shoaib Malik from the squad.
