MAKKAH: The Civil Defense evacuated about 1,500 Iranian pilgrims when a fire broke out in the 14-story Al-Yamamah residential building in Misfalah district of Makkah on Tuesday night.
Lt. Col. Ali Al-Muntashiri, spokesman for the Civil Defense in Makkah, said there were no casualties but material losses were estimated at around SR15,000. He said two Iranian women suffered slight suffocation due to smoke and were rushed to Al-Nour Specialist Hospital where they were treated and discharged.
Al-Muntashiri said all occupants in the building were evacuated and the fire was extinguished very quickly. He dismissed any foul play and said the fire was caused by an electric surge.
