MUHAMMAD agreed with his younger brother Saleh to invest in electronic equipment. They opened a shop. Behind their showroom is a bigger room split into two offices: one for Muhammad and the other for Saleh. They printed visiting cards in which Muhammad was given the title of the general manager while his brother Saleh was made the executive manager.

This story repeats itself so many times. You go to any public or private establishment to see the thirst for management and the hunger to rule and control. Even if the administration is not more than two people, you will find them both to be managers!

You pass by the office of the manager. You will find it occupying a big space. He will have a manager for his office assistant, a manager for his tea boys, a manager for photocopying, and so on.

Our society is a society of managers. You should not be surprised when you enter a grocery and find two people working — one of them is a Saudi manager practicing his full authority on his poor Asian assistant!

There is a common belief in the Arab world that the manager is the last to come and the first to leave. If ever a manager comes to office before the other staff, there would surely be an earthquake!

With all this large number of managers and directors, the administrative and institutional management has made great progress to the rear. We tend to forget that Bill Gates resigned from his job as the head of Microsoft to become an ordinary employee. Is this not managerial success?

We hear about managers who have been in their post for ages. Their cars have changed.

Their offices and comfortable chairs have changed, but their vision and mission remained the same!

Can we ever see a Saudi Bill Gates carrying his black briefcase, leaving the building in the care of the talented?www.turkid.com
