MAKKAH: A fire broke out after midnight on Wednesday at a bakery and a foodstuff shop in the vegetables and fruit market in Kaakiyyah district in Makkah, leveling the construction and leaving four people injured, spokesman of the Civil Defense Lt. Col. Ali Al-Muntashiri said on Thursday.

He said the fire completely destroyed the second floor of the commercial center where rice and other foodstuffs were being stored. “The ceiling fell off as a result of the flame and heat,” he added.

Al-Muntashiri said the first floor of the building contained a showroom while the second was a store or foodstuff.

He said two workers in the shop and four of the Civil Defense personnel suffered slight suffocation and were rushed to Al-Nur Specialist Hospital by Red Crescent ambulances.

According to the spokesman, investigations were still continuing to determine the cause of the fire.
