MUMBAI: Heavy rains which lashed Mumbai on Friday killed at least 12 people. Fifteen people were injured when rocks slid down a hillside on 15 shanties in Shastrinagar in the Sakinaka area of suburban Andheri late Thursday night, said Additional Commissioner of Police Amitabh Gupta.
Fourteen fire engines were deployed to rescue the people trapped under rocks. The injured were taken to nearby Rajewadi Hospital in Ghatkopar.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan announced compensation of 100,000 rupees each to the family of those killed and between 25,000 rupees and 50,000 rupees to the injured depending on the extent of injury.
According to information given by a Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official, the slum dwellers of Shastrinagar were warned that the area faced the threat of landslides and were told to vacate the place and move out to a safer location.
However, the residents ignored the warnings, the official said.
