RAMALLAH: Palestinian Authority’s security forces arrested four Hamas members and supporters in the West Bank, according to a Hamas press statement issued on Friday. Hamas said they were arrested for their “political affiliations with Hamas.”
The movement said the detainees are from the governorates of Nablus, Ramallah and Hebron. The detainees included the director of Palestinian Legislative Council office in Ramallah.
The movement said its members were arrested after the PA security forces “stormed their homes, looking for them and attacking their families.”
Hamas and Fatah are cracking down on their political opponents in the territories they control. In June 2007 when Hamas routed forces supporting Mahmoud Abbas and took control of the Gaza Strip.
Hamas has thwarted Egyptian reconciliation efforts, saying it cannot sit down with Abbas while his forces are arresting Hamas supporters in the West Bank.
