RAMALLAH: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be arriving shortly for a visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories, a report said on Sunday.
The Palestinian daily Al-Qods said Clinton would be visiting the region as part of US efforts to restart the stalled peace process. So far the report has remained unconfirmed by Palestinian or Israeli official sources.
The official visit is scheduled to take place while US special envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell, is in Israel and Palestinian territories as well, Al-Qods said. Mitchell is scheduled to arrive in the region this week.
Clinton met with US President Barack Obama on Thursday and updated him on the renewed peace efforts. The White House called on both sides to embrace restrictions and among other things reiterated the demand for the halt of Israel’s settlement activity.
Clinton also commended the Palestinians on bolstered efforts in the fields of security as well as on the establishment of new Palestinian institutions, but said the authority had to do more to prevent “terror”.
The US secretary of state is set to meet with Arab foreign minister in Morocco on Nov. 2-3.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday said the US failed to bridge the division between the Palestinian Authority and Israel.
