JEDDAH: India’s export of textiles including synthetic and rayon to Saudi Arabia continues to increase and the upcoming Haj season augurs well for the export trade, Vinod K. Ladia, vice chairman of the Synthetic and Rayon Textile Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC), said over the weekend.

Speaking to Arab News on the sidelines of a buyer-seller met of Indian textiles organized by SRTEPC at the Trident Hotel, Ladia, who headed the mission, said: “We expect our textile exports to the Kingdom to exceed the $200 million mark in 2009. Last year’s exports were $129 million, about 20 percent more than the previous year.”

He said there was tremendous scope for forging joint ventures in the textile field that could mutually benefit businessmen from both sides. “The potential is vast and we are overwhelmed by the response from local businessmen,” he added.

Indian Consul General Sayeed Ahmed Baba opened the event, with Rasheed Khan, consul commercial at the Consulate General of India, providing the visitors with an overview of the local market.

The delegation, which earlier visited Riyadh, included representatives of 22 member companies of the Mumbai-based SRTEPC. The mission exhibited a wide range of manmade textile products including fabrics and made-ups.

The two countries share a tradition of close trade relationship that goes back over the centuries.

In recent years, these relationships have further strengthened resulting in significant strengthening of economic and trade ties, the consul general remarked.

The Kingdom is India’s sixth largest market for manmade textile products.
