RIYADH: A project that would, when completed, provide an additional 6 million cubic meters of water to Jeddah and Makkah is to be carried out over the next few years, the National Water Company (NWC) announced on Saturday.
The company said the first and second phases of the project would cost SR1.4 million.
The first phase of the project will be implemented in the Briman area of Jeddah where storage with a capacity of 2 million cubic meters will be built, while the second phase will be carried out in the old Jeddah-Makkah Road area where another storage facility that will hold 1.5 million cubic meters of water will be constructed. “The implementation of these projects represents a strategic and significant action taken to provide water to Jeddah over the coming years to cope with the increasing demand,” said the NWC in a statement.
The company added that under the third and fourth phases of the project storage with a total capacity of 2.5 million cubic meters of water would be built bringing total capacity to 6 million cubic meters.
Contract for the first and second phases will be offered for bidding to local and international companies within six months. Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has previously ordered the rapid establishment of water storage facilities for Jeddah and Makkah.
