NAJRAN: Local prison authorities foiled an attempt by an inmate to smuggle over 700 intoxicating pills into jail when he returned from a time of seclusion with his wife.
“The prisoner had swallowed 735 tablets which he tried to take to the cells of his other inmates,” said Col. Ali bin Ahmad Al-Shihri, director of Jazan prisons. He added that the prisoner was allowed to go out of the prison to spend time with his wife.
He did not name the prisoner but said he is in his 50’s and is serving a five-year term having been convicted of a drugs offense; he had already served two and a half years.
Al-Shihri said the prison guards suspected the prisoner of hiding something and decided to send him to hospital for medical checkup. He said an examination proved that the man was hiding the tablets in his stomach.
He urged prisoners to abide by rules and regulations and to appreciate the care the government was giving them.
About two months ago, guards at a Jazan prison foiled an attempt by a prisoner to smuggle an unspecified quantity of hashish while also coming back to his cell after spending time with his wife.
